Tommy, at age 6, witnesses the murder of his stepfather by his father, who returned from the war. He is told by his father and his mother to forget everything about it. Tommy takes this literally and goes inward to his mind and stops seeing, hearing, and speaking. His parents are worried by this and go through several attempts to cure him: The Hawker, the Acid Queen, and a doctor. Eventually, Tommy find happiness in pinball despite his disability. He becomes the champion and when he gets cured he is hailed by his fans as the next "Messiah."
