Written by Alfred Noyes in 1906 the epic ballad tells the story of Highwayman whom comes across, Bess, the landlords daugther on the lonely moores of England. He falls in love with her and she with him; he vows to return with the riches which would enble them to marry. Yet, the plot turns tragic when Bess, to save him from certain death at the hands of soliders, shoots herself as warning him not to venture back. Only when the Highwaymen hears of her death does he risk his own life to avenage her.
