The true story of 25 year old former Marine and Eagle Scout Charles Whitman who, on August 1, 1966, shot and killed 10 people from the tower of the University of Texas at Austin Main Building. He killed 3 others inside and 1 other died from her wounds on the ground a week later. During the 96-minute shooting spree, he also wounded 32 others. The night before, Whitman had also killed his wife and mother. The ex-Marine shot people more than 400 yards away and put two bullets through the fabric of an airplane flying overhead before two Austin police officers killed him. This hisorical accounting delves into background information about Whitman's family life; he was not the all-American young man gone suddenly insane as he was depicted in the media. Instead, the dark secrets of his relationship with his father, and a brain tumor discovered during his autopsy are woven into this account of calculated evil. This was a case that defined mass murder, the largest in U.S. history at that time, and contributed to the impetus to establish SWAT teams in cities around the United States.
