This smash hit musical comedy is about, you guessed it, an elementary and middle school spelling bee and its participants. In between nerve-racking rounds of spelling, the spellers talk, or rather, sing, about their lives and problems, from Chip Tolentino(last year's winner)'s unfortunate erection, to Leaf Coneybear's horrible ADHD, to Olive Ostrovsky's unattending parents. Who will win the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee?
If a film version were greenlit, I think it might be better if they altered the title to 'Spelling Bee".
Um hello, Marcy Park is an ASIAN character, her song is about that - Margaret Cho all the way!
Part of the fun of the Bway show is that it's adults playing these kid's parts - so no "teeny boppers" get some really well-known actors to act silly in a movie.
NO ROB MARSHALL - he ruined "Chicago" and sucked all the life out of "Geisha", Jared Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite") is a much better choice for director.
Is this really going to be greenlit? I hope so, I adore this show! Make more WIlliam Finn musicals into movies, like oh I dont know..."Falsettos" and "New Brain"...
Marcy Park's song isn't about being asian. It's about speaking six languages. Marcy can be whatever nationality, so long as the actress fits the role.
Are they really planning on making it? I adore the musical. However, I really don't see it working very well as a film. Maybe it's just me.
Also, I personally think Rob Marshall is a wonderful director. Also, the great thing about him is that he knows how to direct for stage and for film. So he knows how to translate something from stage to film with a great balance between the two so it sticks to the original show without looking sloppy or overdone. I hope that made sense.
Anna Popplewell for Marcy Park. Love to see her play an American girl.
